The Opposing Effects of Hedonic and Eudaimonic Happiness on Gene Expression is Correlated Noise
نویسنده
چکیده
Background This paper re-analyzes the gene set data from Fredrickson et al. 2013 [1] and Fredrick2 son et al. 2015 [2] which purportedly showed opposing effects of hedonic and eudaimonic happiness 3 on the expression levels of a set of genes that have been correlated with social adversity. 4 Methods Four non-parametric methods were used to test the two null hypotheses addressed in the 5 original studies (H0 : β̄hedonia = 0 and H0 : β̄eudaimonia = 0) as well as the null hypothesis of no 6 difference in effect between hedonic and eudaimonic happiness (H0 : β̄hedonia − β̄eudaimmonia = 0). 7 Results The results unambiguously fail to support opposing effects, or any effect, on the pattern of 8 gene expression. 9 Conclusions The apparently replicated pattern of gene expression is simply “correlated noise” due to 10 the geometry of multiple regression given the strongly correlated measures of hedonic and eudaimonic 11 happiness. 12

The Opposing Effect of Hedonic and Eudaimonic Happiness on Gene Expression is Correlated Noise
Background This paper presents a re-analysis of the gene set data from Fredrickson et al. 2013 [8] and Fredrickson et al. 2015 [7] which purportedly showed opposing effects of hedonic and eudaimonic happiness on the expression levels of a set of genes that have been correlated with social adversity. Fredrickson et al. 2015 [7] used a linear model of fixed effects with correlated error (using GL...
متن کاملHighly correlated hedonic and eudaimonic well-being thwart genomic analysis.
In PNAS, Frederickson and colleagues (1) claim “hedonic and eudaimonic well-being engage distinct gene regulatory programs despite their similar effects on total wellbeing and depressive symptoms.” Complex analyses depend entirely on distinguishing hedonic vs. eudaimonic well-being with a self-report measure. Any interpretation needs to accommodate the high likelihood of confounding and reverse...
متن کاملA functional genomic perspective on human well-being.
To identify molecular mechanisms underlying the prospective health advantages associated with psychological well-being, we analyzed leukocyte basal gene expression profiles in 80 healthy adults who were assessed for hedonic and eudaimonic well-being, as well as potentially confounded negative psychological and behavioral factors. Hedonic and eudaimonic well-being showed similar affective correl...
متن کاملCorrection: Psychological Well-Being and the Human Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity
Research in human social genomics has identified a conserved transcriptional response to adversity (CTRA) characterized by up-regulated expression of pro-inflammatory genes and down-regulated expression of Type I interferon- and antibody-related genes. This report seeks to identify the specific aspects of positive psychological well-being that oppose such effects and predict reduced CTRA gene e...
متن کاملThe Naturally Emerging Structure of Well-Being Among Young Adults: ‘‘Big Two’’ or Other Framework?
This study explored common measures of well-being to assess whether the naturally emerging relationships are best explained by a ‘‘Big Two’’ (hedonic vs. eudaimonic) or another, yet to be discovered framework. A sample of young adult participants (n = 355) completed measures of life satisfaction, flourishing, positive and negative experience, meaning in life, basic psychological needs, and subj...
